Simon, Kent

I’d been through a particularly challenging few years, both personally & professionally, and knew that I needed to reassess the direction my life was taking, particularly given the change in the nature of my job since the pandemic.

I’d never had really clear idea of what made me enjoy (or dislike!) my work, and had no clear idea of the way forward – all I knew was that I needed a change. Paul helped me understand what really made me tick, then helped me consider the types of roles that would provide me with the fulfilment I was looking for.

Having now been equipped with a far greater understanding of my needs, I’ve been able to confidently move forward with a career change that will provide me with a more fulfilling job role & a much improved work / life balance.

I’m really positive about the future, and can now understand how the right job can not only provide a more enjoyable career, but also allow the time & opportunity to pursue other interests too.

Steph Francis, Bristol

I had taken the decision to leave teaching to protect my physical and mental health, but didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do next. I knew I wanted a challenge but was wary of jumping into a new career, and I had very little idea of what jobs might be available or how to go about getting them.

I really am truly thankful that I took the plunge to work with Paul. He led me to understand what matters most to me and he asked the right questions to really force me to think deeply and confront some unhelpful thinking I didn’t even realise I was doing which was limiting me. And before working with Paul, I didn’t even know my new career existed..!

I’ve now got a new job in a meaningful area that I feel passionately about and which genuinely aligns with who I am as a person and what I want to do with my life. I am really excited about my career going forwards!

Hayley, Leeds

I had been in my job for 20 years and after a particularly challenging period really wanted to make a change. But I felt pigeonholed, I had no idea what I wanted to do, how my skills would transfer or how I would even get the process started.

Paul has been fantastic to work with, encouraging and supportive, helping to guide me without biasing my decisions. I’ve learnt that my skill set is actually vast, and I now understand how to reframe my skills so they apply to other roles.

I’m excited about what my future may look like and am confident that I’ve chosen a meaningful path that is right for me.

Rob Griffiths

With Paul, I went on a journey of self discovery and found the confidence and ability to pursue new meaningful futures. Paul’s coaching is challenging, rewarding, enlightening and refreshing, helping you tackle big decisions in a rational and bitesized way. I feel excited and confident about my new future path.

Sarah, Exeter

Having spent many years trying to find a way out of my current career, I felt I really needed an expert to help me navigate a career change. I now have a much clearer understanding of what I am looking for; what skills I have that could transfer to a different role; what might be holding me back and how I can move forward.

Peter Doyle

I had spent over 22 years in my job and was both moribund and institutionalised. I knew I needed to do something to break free. Over the course of my sessions with Paul I have experienced an epiphany. Our work reignited the fire of confidence and hunger within me and has led me to a new path which I sincerely believe will be productive, satisfying and abundant. I am looking forward to the future!

Ruth

I needed professional and unbiased support with career change. Working with Paul gave me a holistic overview of what makes me the person I am to inform my next steps. I have made some very important decisions and now have confidence to take action as a result. I have an action plan and a set of tools to go to if I need to make more changes or decisions.

Anthony

I was unhappy in my job and wanted to assess my options. Paul helped me think deeply about which options matched the kind of existence I would like.

We took a holistic approach, considering my career, financial and personal life aspirations. Our sessions helped me set a clear course for the next phase of my career.

As a result, I have inner peace. I have a clear plan and know in my bones that this is the right course for me. I would not hesitate to recommend Paul to friends and colleagues – in fact, I have already done so!

Andrew C.

I was having sleepless nights, feeling unhappy and spread thin. I wanted a career change with good work-life balance, but didn’t know what I wanted to do or what was out there, or how to think about the financial transition. Coaching was hard work at times (!) but it’s helped me enormously – after working with Paul, I have been offered a perfect stepping stone job in the industry I now know I want to work in. I’m very happy and excited about moving forward.

Steve P

I was stuck knowing what direction to go in and lacked the confidence to make any changes. Paul helped showed me who I am, what I enjoy and what I want from a career, and really challenged the way that I think. I’m excited about moving forwards now to a place where I am a lot happier.

I wanted a career change but I was unsure what I wanted and what direction to go in.

Now I know where I want to go, I know how to get there, and I have belief in myself.

Claire Cooper

I was having difficulty working out what to do with my career, and for years I have let things get in the way.

Working with Paul, I have managed to work out what I was doing and why, and make clear decisions that I wasn’t able to before. Without Paul I would not have reached the point I have now.

Your Coach

My own story begins like many – degrees, jobs in large organisations, working all hours.

But I never knew what I wanted from a career, and was always unhappy at work. When my children were born, drifting along unhappily just wasn’t good enough any more.

Over the next few years, I learnt what really makes a successful career change and where most career change processes are getting it wrong. Now I use this knowledge, together with my expert training as a coach, to help others.

I’m a certified Animas transformational coach. My training is accredited by the globally recognised International Coaching Federation (ICF) and the Association for Coaching. I am a Global Member of the ICF and an Associate member coach with the European Coaching and Mentoring Council.

Frequently asked questions

Who should join the Lab?

You should join the Career Change Lab if you:

  • have some years of work under your belt and want to find and plan a new career direction.
  • want to find your own answers, rather than have someone offer suggestions on a plate.
  • want to understand yourself better, explore your career options and create a meaningful and achievable plan for change.
  • are open-minded, willing to think about things in new ways and confront whatever may be holding you back.
  • are committed to discovering possibilities, making a plan for positive change and putting in the work to make that happen.
Who should NOT join the Lab?

Please find alternative solutions if you:

  • aren’t truly committed to an in-depth approach to exploring your options and planning your future.
  • want instant certainty or a quick fix.
  • expect someone else to give you all the answers. This program will not directly suggest careers, but will guide you to find career directions that are right for you.
  • just see work as a means of becoming wealthy. Which is not to say you can’t plan to earn more – this can absolutely form part of your goals if you join the Lab. But the Lab is all about finding fulfilment and making sure it works for you in practical terms, whatever that means for you. So we will factor in your financial circumstances, but Lab workers are driven by fulfilment, meaning and purpose.
What's the workload like?

You may have noticed that other career change programs are fairly short and promise general understandings of relevant issues.

In contrast, The Career Change Lab offers a highly detailed, robust approach to career planning with a specific option-finding strategy and guidance.

The Lab is spaced over 8 months to allow people with busy lives to complete a thorough, well researched career change plan.

But make no mistake, there’s still plenty of work to do!

The time commitment will vary as we move through the program, and you get out what you put in. If you want to explore and plan in greater depth, it will take more time than if you really want to streamline things.

As a very general guide, you should expect to put aside between 1-4 hours a week depending on the stage of the process we’re at.

What's the difference between coaching sessions and discussion groups?

The Lab includes 8 x 1.5-hour group coaching sessions. Each is tightly focused on a specific step in the program and will have a particular agenda, guided by the coach.

The 7 optional discussion groups are an ideal environment to connect with your fellow Lab members between coaching sessions for peer support, networking, shared expertise and ongoing motivation and accountability.

What are the outcomes of the Lab?

By the end of the program:

  • You will understand what drives you, what you naturally excel at, and what makes you happy at work. You will know yourself better.
  • You will have explored meaningful and motivating career options, understood how these relate to your finances and other practicalities, and prioritised a small number of especially exciting and viable options.
  • You will have thought deeply about how you want the future to be and considered how your plans can align with this vision.
  • You will have undertaken deep research into your shortlisted options, identified any gaps and understood how to fill them.
  • You will know what it takes to achieve the career(s) that are likely to make you happy.
  • You will have the opportunity to create a detailed, robust action plan to take you to where you want to be.
Should I already have ideas about possible careers?

Most people don’t. The Career Change Lab makes no assumptions – we will build your options from the ground up. This means it’s completely fine to have no ideas whatsoever when you start, but equally, if you do have a few ideas but aren’t really sure if they’re right, the Lab will allow you to test these existing options alongside new possibilities.

The Lab is not the best fit if you are already know firmly what you want to do, and aren’t interested in alternatives.

What's the compatibility check about?

The compatibility check isn’t necessary if you’ve read these FAQ and you’re happy you’re a good fit for the program.

If so, please go ahead and book your seat!

If you have any doubt, a quick 10-minute compatibility check will answer whatever questions you may have.

For clarity, the compatibility check is not an in-depth career consultation and isn’t there to give career advice. It’s a brief chat to ensure you’re a good match for the Lab, based on the other points in these FAQ.

What is the attendance requirement? Are the coaching calls recorded?

I want you to succeed.

For this reason, it’s critical that you attend all of the coaching calls, and you’ll need a minimum 80% attendance rate at any given time to continue with the program. This doesn’t apply to the optional discuss

This is because the Lab is highly interactive – it is a coaching program, not a simple educational course, so just absorbing information retrospectively won’t lead to success.

However, we all know that life happens, so the sessions are recorded. This means that, on an exceptional basis, you can catch up if you’re unwell or have an emergency to deal with.

If life really throws you a curve ball and your attendance unavoidably dips below 80%, to avoid having to abandon the program altogether you may be offered a place on a later cohort. As I said – I want you to succeed!

The attendance requirement doesn’t apply to the optional 7 group discussion sessions, but you’re highly encouraged to attend all 7.
